'Somerset Swimming'
From Minehead in the West to Frome in the East, Keynsham in the North to Wincanton in the South, the County of Somerset boasts 27 affiliated swimming clubs with 5739 swimmers plus associated coaches/teachers, swimming officials and helpers.
The County holds annual short course (25m) Championships normally over three weekends during March with a highly competitive programme at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre and Millfield School pools. The event schedule allows the County Swimming Committee to adopt an ‘entry for all’ policy along with the ability for elite swimmers in the Youth Ages to practice progressive 100m swimming over heats, Championship and Youth finals during the course of a day.
The 2002 Championships proved very successful in this our Centenary year. Attracting entries from Wincanton SC for the first time in their history along with elite GB swimmers from University of Bath, such as Darren Mew, in preparation for the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester. We were also able to invite the world’s fastest man in water, Mark Foster, to demonstrate a 50m freestyle short course swim shortly before one of our Championship finals sessions in celebration of our centenary and to help in Mark’s preparation for the World Short Course Championships held in Moscow during April. He swam a time of 21.84 seconds, just 0.63 seconds outside the world record and entertained one and all at the pool that day taking the time to sign autographs, present medals and feature in photographs, something that the younger swimmers especially will remember throughout their swimming careers. We hope to be able to extend similar invitations during coming years.
Additional Inter-County and Inter-Club events are run during the season allowing for swimmers of all abilities to compete against each other. When time allows the County also run a 50m Sprint meet during the autumn.
