Bristol Channel Swim

On Sunday, 26th August, Gary Carpenter (Clevedon ASC) accomplished a long held dream - he swam the Bristol Channel from Penarth to Clevedon, in so doing he broke two records as follows:
(1)  Gary became the youngest swimmer to swim the Bristol Channel from Penarth to Clevedon.
(2) Gary broke the record for being the fastest swimmer across in a time of
5 hours and 35 minutes, he broke the previous record by two hours !!!

In completing this historic swim, Gary, to his eternal credit raised the magnificent sum of £55,000 for Childrens Hospice South West.

Somerset ASA has great pleasure in offering Gary hearty congratulations on his magnificent swim.

    Regional Plan for Sport 2004-2008 from Sport England

Brief details

 The focus is on four strategic themes of: -

1. Delivering community sport
2. Encouraging active living
3. Influencing strategic planning
4. Raising sports profile

For us this means: -                                                                                                                         
1.     The provision of multi-sport, multi-activity sites.  Sharing expertise with other clubs, groups and organisations and providing a better platform for volunteering and family engagement.
2.     Creating opportunities for the provision of full time coaches and a profession for coaching.
3.     Focus on the development of the participant rather than the sport or club.  Create the right environment for people to engage and develop.
